Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer:- The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the theoretical physicist and the father of the atomic bomb. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert.

He took part in the World War II Manhattan Project that led to the development of the world’s first nuclear weapons — and who later found himself confronting the moral consequences of scientific progress.

About Oppenheimer

J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American physicist and one of the key figures in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. He is often referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb.”

Oppenheimer was born in New York City and showed an early aptitude for science and mathematics. He studied physics at Harvard University and later completed his doctoral studies at the University of Göttingen in Germany. He made significant contributions to theoretical physics, particularly in the field of quantum mechanics.

During World War II, Oppenheimer was appointed the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, a top-secret U.S. government research program aimed at developing an atomic bomb. He played a crucial role in coordinating and overseeing the work of numerous scientists and engineers involved in the project.

In July 1945, the first successful test of an atomic bomb, codenamed “Trinity,” took place in New Mexico. Oppenheimer witnessed the test and famously quoted a line from Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” This quote reflected his mixed feelings about the destructive power of the weapon he helped create.

In 1924, Oppenheimer was informed that he had been accepted into Christ’s College, Cambridge. He wrote to Ernest Rutherford requesting permission to work at the Cavendish Laboratory. Bridgman provided Oppenheimer with a recommendation, which conceded that Oppenheimer’s clumsiness in the laboratory made it apparent his forte was not experimental but rather theoretical physics. Rutherford was unimpressed, but Oppenheimer went to Cambridge in the hope of landing another offer. He was ultimately accepted by J. J. Thomson on condition that he complete a basic laboratory course.

After the war, Oppenheimer became an influential advocate for international control of atomic energy. However, his security clearance was revoked in 1954 due to concerns about his past associations with left-wing political groups. This action severely affected his career and reputation.

He continued his work in theoretical physics and taught at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of California, Berkeley. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science.

He passed away on February 18, 1967, in Princeton, New Jersey. His legacy remains significant in the history of science and the ethical questions surrounding the development and use of atomic weapons.
